Electronic Travel Authorisation (“ETA“) | Impact on Business Visitors

Electronic Travel Authorisation (“ETA”) Scheme will roll out worldwide in 2025. Individuals who did not need a visa to visit the UK before (‘non-visa’ nationals) will now need to apply for an ETA before they travel.

The ETA scheme aims to prevent individuals who pose a threat, or who are otherwise unsuitable, from visiting the UK.

We look at the impact of ETA on Business Visitors and here are the main points to take into consideration.

📌ETA can be refused on the basis of suitability requirements for visitors – for example, because of previous criminal convictions or other non-conductive grounds

📌If an ETA is rejected, you may need to apply for an alternative immigration permission to be able to travel to the UK – for example, Business Visitor visa

📌The Home Office will be able to view an individual’s travel history and challenge (when needed) if an individual is a genuine business visitor: for example, if you are a frequent visitor or you visit for an extended period of time

📌Even if ETA is granted, it does not guarantee entry to the UK: you should be prepared for the questions upon arrival about the purpose of your visit

📌The majority of ETA applications are processed within 3 days, but this may not be suitable for an urgent travel

📌The government suggests applying at least 21 working days before travel
